I also like to visit Salerno and, above all, during Christmas. The atmosphere, in this period, is made even more magical by the famous Luci d'Artista: a cultural event launched by the Municipality of Turin in 1998. On this occasion, some squares and streets of the city are dressed in lights that go beyond the usual end-of-year lights: works conceived by contemporary artists qualified for their high scenographic value or symbolic and conceptual matters.

A bit of history...

Salerno is crossed by the Irno River, which, until the middle of the last century, marked its eastern border and from which, probably, its name derives.

The first documented settlement in the area dates back to the 6th century BC: an Osco-Etruscan center on the River Irno, not far from the coast.

In the 5th century BC, with the retreat of the Etruscans from southern Italy, the Samnites occupied the same settlement, only to be abandoned around 280 BC.

During the Middle Ages, the city lived under Lombard's domination. It was the capital of the Principality of Salerno, a territory that came to include much of the Italian continental South.

This is where the Salernitana Medical School was located, the first and most important medical institution in Europe, considered by many to be a forerunner of modern universities. In 1968 the city became the seat of the University of Salerno; later, it was deployed as a campus in the nearby municipalities of Fisciano and Baronissi.

In the first half of the nineteenth century, the first industries were born in the area, mostly with foreign capital (Swiss).

The city of Salerno is appreciated for its excellent cuisine and recent urban transformations that integrate perfectly with the glorious past of the ancient Lombard Principality.
