Pinerolo is the most beautiful city in Piedmont. Its territory extends from the mountains to the plains and is characterized by wooded areas and meadows.

In the past, a thriving industrial center in the textile, paper, and confectionery sectors, it became a tourist center in the 21st century, given its glorious past as the capital of the principality of Piedmont from 1295 to 1418.

History

During the French occupation, from 1631 to 1696, the fortress of Pinerolo, the Donjon, was used as a prison.

Here, Louis XIV imprisoned the mysterious character known as the "Iron Mask." To these, every other year, in October, one of the most critical events in the city is dedicated.

What to visit

Piazza Vittorio Veneto (known as "Piazza Fontana") is the beating heart of Pinerolo. Inside is a stone fountain with a monobloc basin by Malanaggio and a marble statue dedicated to General Filippo Brignone, the hero of Palestro.

Numerous medieval buildings exist, including the Palazzo dei Principi d'Acaia, the House of the Senate, and the House of the Vicar.

Among the religious buildings:

- the Cathedral, dedicated to San Donato, preserves inside Gothic stoups and a wooden pulpit from the 1600s

- the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, built in the 16th century in a panoramic position

- the Church of San Domenico with remains of frescoes from the 15th century.
