An archaeological site that dates back to about 15 million years ago and has also been mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy... #tuttitaly
Near Castelnovo ne 'Monti, we find the wonderful tourist attraction, Pietra di Bismantova.
A beautiful hike that takes you to the top, about 1041 meters above sea level. The view from up there is awe-
inspiring, and getting it is pretty simple; there are some sections on rock and earth where to facilitate the climb,
you can help yourself with ropes, but with my little man, we got to the top without much effort in about 30 minutes, seeing some snake or lizard sculptures on the rocks. Long paths also lead to the village for those wishing to spend a whole day immersed in nature.
The Bismantova stone is an imposing limestone rock dating back to the Miocene, about 15 million years ago.
It is an important archaeological and geological site known
worldwide among sport climbing enthusiasts, which thousands of tourists visit yearly.
Everywhere from the ridge, you can see its unmistakable shape 1 km long, 240 meters wide, and 300 meters high compared to the surrounding plain.
The Pietra di Bismantova has been, over the years, a sacred place and the base of a Byzantine military structure. However, it is still unclear where its name comes from, mentioned for the first time in a document of 1062 in which it is defined as "Petra de Bismanto." The
current term will be noted by none other than Dante Alighieri in the Purgatory of the Divine Comedy. According to some scholars, the poet personally visited the place in 1306.
This majestic massif is one of the unique mountains of the Reggiano Apennines.
In these areas, you will find a dense network of paths, primarily suitable for everyone, which reach the top and make it an ideal place for walking.
