Peschiera del Garda (VR) - Parish of San Martino Vescovo and Venetian Walls - UNESCO Heritage - Veneto

It is one of the most characteristic villages of Lake Garda: it overlooks the lower Veronese shore of the lake at the point where the Garda waters flow into the Mincio outlet and is surrounded by canals... #tuttitaly

A town in the province of Verona, Peschiera del Garda, is located at the southeastern end of Lake Garda and is 22 km from Catullo di Verona, the nearest airport.

The historic center of Peschiera del Garda is enclosed in a fortress, which for centuries had the function of defense.

In 2017, the fortress became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Porta Brescia is the western entrance to the historic center. Above the gate, the ancient walkway, which connects the Tognon and Feltrin bastions, allows us to admire the fortress from above and thus discover beautiful views.

What to visit

The Museo della Palazzina Storica, where the resistance on the Piave River was organized after the defeat of Caporetto. We see the room where, on 8 November 1917, King Vittorio Emanuele III and the Allies met for the historic Peschiera Conference. The beautiful Parco Catullo surrounds the building.

The Porta Verona Artillery Barracks, built between 1854 and 1857 by Radetzky, is home to the Historical Archive and the Civic Library;

it hosts theatrical and musical performances in its courtyard.

The parish church of San Martino overlooks Piazza Ferdinando di Savoia. From there, you can cross the sixteenth-century Ponte dei Voltoni, watching the Canale di Mezzo, where the fishermen's boats stop.

At the end of a wide avenue of cypresses, at the foot of the verdant Garda hills, stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Frassino, built between 1511 and 1514 in the place where the farmer Bartolomeo Broglia, attacked by a snake, would have seen a statuette of the Madonna among the branches of an ash tree.

The farmer begged the Madonna to save him, and

immediately, the snake moved away. The church, rich in works of art, is also called an art gallery. Official site

Not far from the Sanctuary, the most romantic road crossing in the world: two streets dedicated to the famous showbiz couple Sandra Mondaini and Raimondo Vianello died in 2010.

The two streets cross each other, and the two plaques with their respective names are fixed on the same pole.

What to eat

Among the dishes based on lake fish, the marinated trout, sardines in saor, fisherman's pike with polenta, and prawn salads are to be tasted.
