Pastena and the Pastena Caves (FR) - Ciociaria - Lazio

Pastena is a charming town in the province of Frosinone, in the picturesque Ciociaria region in central Italy. This lovely village is famous for its natural beauty and the Pastena Caves.

The Pastena Caves are one of the largest speleological complexes in Italy. This fascinating cave system extends for over 3 km, of which approximately 1 km is open to visits. The Pastena Caves are divided into two distinct branches: the active branch and the fossil branch.

The active branch offers a breathtaking spectacle, with lakes, waterfalls, and spectacular concretions. Here, it is possible to admire the beauty of the stalactites, stalagmites, and the strange forms of erosion of the vaults. One of the highlights of this branch is the Blue Lake Room, a large and spectacular room where the Fosso Mastro, a stream that crosses the cave, forms a suggestive waterfall.

However, you can admire columns and other unique geological formations with calcite drapery in the fossil branch.

During the visit, you will pass through several rooms, such as the Hall of Bats, the Gallery of Wonders, the Hall of Columns, and the Hall of Mount Calvary. Each room offers a unique and fascinating show, with formations that seem to come from another world.

Pastena is an ideal destination for lovers of nature, history, and speleology, who will be able to discover a unique and evocative place in the heart of Ciociaria.
