At the foot of Monte Cristallo (3221m), the highest peak in the Ampezzo Dolomites, is Passo Tre Croci, the pass that connects the Ampezzo Valley with Misurina, Auronzo di Cadore, and Val d'Ansiei.
The name of the pass is a tribute to a tragedy that took place in February 1789, when a mother with her two children, who left from Auronzo di Cadore towards Cortina d'Ampezzo in search of work, died due to the frost near the pass.
In memory of what happened, three wooden crosses were erected.
Passo Tre Croci is a starting point for hikers: several paths start from here, one of which leads to Lake Sorapiss (altitude 1923), one of the Dolomites' most evocative stretches of water.
