In Val Gardena, in South Tyrol, stands Ortisei, a small town famous for its artistic wood carvings, carried out for generations by families of expert carvers. As early as the 17th century, numerous Ortisei families dedicated themselves to wood carving, thus creating sculptures with a biblical theme, statues of saints, and altars.

Tourist attractions

It is possible to admire an extensive collection of wooden sculptures in the Museum of Val Gardena, which also exhibits evidence of the prehistory and ancient history of the valley.

The pedestrian area of Ortisei is considered the most beautiful in the Dolomites, thanks to the decorated shop windows and the graceful facades of the buildings.

Among the religious buildings, the eighteenth-century parish church of S. Ulrico stands out for its Renaissance and Baroque elements and artistic sculptures.

Tourism is the most important economic sector. The imposing hills surrounding the town make it an ideal starting point for excursions and winter sports activities.

In winter, the village becomes a natural attraction for skiers, while in summer, it is a destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

Gastronomy

The typical dishes of Ortisei to taste are the barley and speck soup, the pork knuckle, the chanterelle mushrooms in the sauce, or the spinach ravioli.
