Noepoli - (PZ) - Parish "Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary" - Pollino National Park - Basilicata

Updated: Jul 14

It offers one of the most evocative landscapes among the towns included in the Pollino National Park. An ancient Oenotrian-Lucanian center, it was also the seat of a Byzantine monastery, and in the feudal age, it belonged to the Sanseverino and Pignatelli families of Aragon. Noepoli has a rich and fascinating history, where archaeological excavations in the town center have brought to light a necropolis with Oenotrian and Lucanian tombs, the finds of which are preserved in the Siritide museum in Policoro... #tuttitaly

Noepoli - (PZ) - Parish "Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary" - Pollino National Park - Basilicata

Enveloped by the natural splendor of the Pollino National Park, Noepoli is a hidden gem that captivates visitors with its breathtaking landscapes. This ancient Lucanian enclave, steeped in a rich history, has withstood the test of time and the reign of powerful feudal lords such as the Sanseverino and the Pignatelli d'Aragona.

What to see

The village is divided into two parts: the "old city," around the castle with massive houses and an outdoor oven, and the "Casale" district, characterized by smaller and simpler houses.

Among Noepoli's treasures are the Monastery of Santa Maria della Saectara, the remains of the feudal castle now the Town Hall, and the charming Piazza Marconi overlooking the Sarmento Valley.

Noepoli's places of worship are true artistic treasures to discover, such as the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has frescoes, wooden statues, and a 15th-century crucifix. Equally evocative and rich in history are the Chapel of the Madonna del Rosario and the Madonna of Costantinopoli.

The nearby Monte Cotugno Dam is the largest earthen dam in Europe, from which the new lake takes its name; Lake Monte Cotugno (also called Lake Senise). It is a dam built between 1970 and 1982 along the Sinni River, in the municipality of Senise (PZ).

Gastronomy

Noepoli's enogastronomic tradition is a celebration of authentic flavors: lagane e ceci (pasta with chickpeas), fave e cicorie (fava beans and chicory), fusilli with breadcrumbs, lamb, mushrooms, baccalà (salted cod) with Senise's IGP peperoni cruschi, and spicy soppressata are just a few of the delicacies to savor, perhaps paired with Aglianico del Vulture DOC wine.

Conclusions

Noepoli is where time seems to have stopped, offering visitors an authentic and unforgettable experience blending art, history, and culinary traditions.
