The Church of Sant'Ermete represents an important point of reference for the Catholic community of Forte dei Marmi, in the beautiful Versilia.

History and Construction

The origins of the church date back to the early 1870s, a period during which a significant expansion of the structure was decided. The project was assigned to engineer Enrico Andreotti, and the works were led by master mason Prospero Bandini. The financial support of the local inhabitants was fundamental for the realization of the work.

The Inauguration and the Bell Tower

The church was inaugurated during a local wedding, while in 1885 the foundations of the bell tower were laid. However, the works were interrupted due to financial problems and resumed only in 1890 under the direction of the Apolloni brothers. The bell tower, completed in 1891, is today the oldest in the western Versilian plain.

Elevation to Parish Status

In 1911, the Church of Sant'Ermete was elevated to a "Parish in itself" by Cardinal Pietro Maffi. Under the guidance of Don Raffaello Galleni, significant expansion works began in 1916, including the construction of the two side naves, completed in 1923.

Modernization

In 1999, an additional step towards modernity was taken with the construction of a new pipe organ, made by the Fratelli Marin. This instrument, equipped with 56 stops on three manuals and a pedal, replaced the organ dating back to 1920, further enriching the musical life of the parish.

Conclusion

The Church of Sant'Ermete is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the community of Forte dei Marmi. Its history, characterized by commitment and perseverance, continues to live through its structures and the initiatives of the parish.
