Monte Romano (VT) - Lazio

Its position so favorable and, above all, far from smog and city stress makes this town the ideal destination for those looking for a bit of relaxation... #tuttitaly

Monte Romano is located a few kilometers from Tarquinia. Witness great civilizations, such as the Etruscan and Roman ones; it also houses wonders from the medieval and Renaissance periods.

The Rocca Respampani and the ancient churches, which lend themselves to witnessing a bygone era, are worth a visit.

The town has developed around the current Aurelia Bis and is located within a valley at the foot of the Rotonda, a hill that hosts numerous centuries-old oaks on its top.

The first settlement of Monte Romano (the ancient Arx Montis Romani) was born right inside the oak grove. This position granted him a natural defense from attacks and allowed him easy control over the surrounding lands.

After the destruction of the Arx Montis Romani, the territory with the Monte Romano estate and the Rocca Respampani became the property of the Santo Spirito Hospital in Sassia, which imposed a well-structured agricultural organization on the lands.

Over time, the peasants who worked these lands began to settle further downstream, giving rise to the future colony of Monte Romano as the country started to take shape.

Only in the eighteenth century, however, did the actual development of the city begin, with the construction of new architectural elements, such as the Prisons, the Clock Tower, and the Fontana del Mascherone.

Between 1787 and 1810, there was a final construction phase in which some houses were built in line with the Prison complex.

Among the important events in Monte Romano, we remember the Palio del Saracino and the Maremma Meat Festival.
