Mining Museum of Rio Marina (LI) - Elba Island - Tuscany

As soon as we landed on the island of Elba, our first thought was to visit the Rio Marina Mining Museum. It is located in the town's historic center and covers 600 square meters inside the Palazzo del Burò.

To visit the museum, you need to inquire about the opening hours, because if you go at one o'clock, you will find it closed, as happened to us.

But since it is a visit not to be missed, especially if you are passionate about minerals, we returned to Rio Marina two days later at a suitable time :)

The museum collects one of the most important and beautiful collections of minerals on the island of Elba, samples of rare beauty, and tells the story of the times of iron extraction. As evidence of this, you will find the recreation of the original rooms of the mine, including the

blacksmith's workshop with original tools and materials found in the quarrying sites and a life-size gallery with natural material recovered in the abandoned mines, which marks the path through a collection that represents the geo-mineralogical heritage of the island of Elba.

During the visit, you will be shown exciting period films of the mining industry and its history and photos of the old mines of Rio Marina and Capoliveri.
