The Mesola Castle is located in the municipality of Mesola in Piazza Umberto I and is one of the Este family's 19 prestigious residences (called delizie, or luxury residences).
History
The construction of the impressive architectural complex of the Mesola Castle began in 1578 at the behest of Duke Alfonso II, the last descendant of the Este dynasty.
Nine miles of walls were then erected, and all the operating buildings as warehouses and stables around which the life of a residence was to rotate that from a simple hunting reserve was turning into a Renaissance city.
The castle remained the property of the Este family until 1771. In 1952 it passed under the control of the Ente Delta Padano and now belongs to the province of Ferrara.
Description
The delight has a square plan architecture with four square crenelated towers at the corners, surrounded by arcaded buildings.
On the castle's main floor, there is a permanent exhibition that traces the stages of the Estense dream that, at the end of the 16th century, was crowned with the construction of this mighty castle.
The elegant setting mixes with the majesty of the rooms with frescoed ceilings, and the visit are enriched by interesting multimedia reproductions.
On the second floor, the castle houses the Mesola Forest and Deer Museum, where reconstructions and panels help to understand the biological evolution of the deer and its traces in the history of Ferrara.
