Masegra Castle is a majestic medieval structure located at the entrance to Valmalenco in the city of Sondrio in Lombardy.
It is the only fortress that survived the destruction of the strongholds by the Grisons in 1639.
This is because it was the residence of the powerful Salis, a Grisons family.
Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several modifications to adapt to its different functions.
During the Middle Ages, it was the home of the Capitani and Beccaria families. In the Renaissance, it mainly became a residence.
With the arrival of the Grisons, it became the home of the Salis family, who used it as a residence and wine warehouse.
Subsequently, it passed into the hands of the Guicciardi family and was used as barracks and headquarters of the military district.
Today, the Castle hosts the CAST, a museum that tells stories about mountain culture, climbing, mountaineering, and the mountain environment through projections and electronic devices.
