The village of Molise, which in 2021 will host for free for those who bring a book... #tuttitaly
A small village in the province of Isernia dominated by the Matese massif, Macchiagodena is known as Terrazza sul Matese.
The inhabited center was formed around the ancient castle, and the stone houses still preserve the original medieval characters. Everything is surrounded by coniferous forests rich in mushrooms, strawberries, blueberries, currants, and raspberries that grow among the shrubs. The area also boasts sizeable natural truffle grounds.
The first news of Macchiagodena dates back to 964, but some recent finds testify to its existence already in the archaic period.
Macchiagodena Castle stands on a limestone spur with three sides overhanging the rocky wall. Initially a watchtower for border control, it has been renovated several times to become a luxurious baronial palace, thus losing its military and strategic characteristics.
A significant work is the Church of S. Nicola. In the historic center stands the San Nicola Village, a dozen stone houses, which the town's parish priest, Don Francesco Romano, received as a gift. He had them partially refurbished in 1992.
The food par excellence of the gastronomic tradition of Macchiagodena is polenta.
It is possible to taste it in two variations: red, with sausage and peppers, or white, with cod and onions.
On the third weekend of August, the Polenta Festival is organized, and in the same month, the Truffle Festival.
