Lugo (RA) - Emilia Romagna

A curiosity: a rare and particular variety of caper plants grows on the walls of the Rocca. In the 19th century, thanks to resale, they were part of the income of the municipal budget. Currently, the capers are collected by officials of the Municipality... #tuttitaly

Lugo (RA) - Emilia Romagna

Lugo is located in the north-western sector of the fertile alluvial plain surrounding Ravenna.

Lugo is characterized by a thriving, primarily agricultural economy.

The town boasts a historic center of considerable interest, witness to a great flowering, over time, of civil and religious architecture.

The eighteenth century was a period characterized by substantial economic and cultural expansion.

The emerging monument of Lugo is the Rocca, whose

current appearance dates back to the end of the 16th century; and today houses the Municipal Residence.

The Pavaglione, built starting from 1771 by Giuseppe Campana, is a rare example of eighteenth-century civil architecture that anticipates modern urban concepts: an imposing quadriportico in which various shops are housed, while the silk cocoon markets were held in the central space.

The Rossini Theater is an eighteenth-century building where prose performances and concerts occur annually.

The Civic Library, housed in the eighteenth-century Palazzo Trisi near the Theater, preserves a remarkable collection of books, manuscripts, and incunabula.

Among the religious buildings, we mention the Carmine Church, which houses the Callido and Gatti organs, on which Gioacchino Rossini practiced as a child.

For opera lovers, following a Rossini itinerary that passes through the musician's house is possible.

The Collegiata, the work of Cosimo Morelli, retains a suggestive fifteenth-century cloister.

The churches of Suffragio and Sant'Onofrio preserve the paintings of Ignazio Stern.

The monument to Francesco Baracca and the

homonymous museum commemorates the Italian aviation pioneer born in Lugo.

The Jewish cemetery attests to a Jewish community in Lugo in past centuries.

Under its very ancient origin and size, the weekly market is a top-rated tourist destination.

The Lotus Park in the Buche Gallamini Oasis is a pleasant, equipped green area.

Gastronomy

Some of the specialties that make up the typical cuisine of Lugo: radicchio and bruschetta, watercress, cappelletti di magro alla Romagna, omelette with rosolacci, and scroccadenti.
