The largest lake of volcanic origin in Europe ... #tuttitaly
Lake Bolsena is a beautiful place loved by everyone; it is rich in history and with many curiosities to discover:
The lake is the largest volcanic basin in Europe, with its 115 square km width.
Curiosities:
- On Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn, there is a crater called Bolsena Lacus, identified with the Cassini-Huygens space mission.
- Lake Bolsena is also present in Dante's Purgatory: when he speaks of gluttony, a vice filled in lake eels, typically cooked with Vernaccia.
Lake Bolsena was formed with the collapse of the Vulsinio volcanic complex. With the lava eruptions, it emptied itself and collapsed, creating an enormous caldera that slowly filled with water. The space around the lake has been the site of intense volcanic activity since ancient times.
The Vulsini district is part of a vast “magmatic province,” developed from southern Tuscany to Rome. This district is characterized by mainly explosive volcanic activity but is now considered among the extinct volcanoes because the last eruption dates back over 10 thousand years.
