Guardialfiera (CB) - Molise

On the ridge of a hill to the left of the Biferno River is a delightful village called Guardialfiera. It originally consisted of a single fortress guarding the Biferno valley; subsequently, the church and the first houses were built around the castle.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta probably dates back to the 11th century and dominates the historic center.

We were also particularly attracted by the panorama with Guardialfiera Lake as its protagonist. This was born between the 60s and 70s due to the construction of a dam on the Biferno River. The purpose of the basin was to supply drinking water to the surrounding villages for agricultural, industrial, and domestic use.

The place also boasts a peculiarity: with the dam's creation, some land around the village was flooded; right here stood an ancient bridge called Ponte di Annibale because it seems that the famous Carthaginian leader marched there to head towards Puglia during the second Punic war. The flooded bridge, from time to time, re-emerges.

It usually happens when long periods in the absence of rainfall and large water consumption in the basin lead to the formation of shoals.

At Guardialfiera, we were enchanted by the historical center, the landscape it overlooks, and the tranquility that reigns there.
