Gualtieri (RE) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Emilia Romagna

Gualtieri is a small Renaissance capital.

The ancient village developed around the Church of Sant'Andrea, where Piazza Nuova is today, where we can admire the Public Well, built-in 1765.

The Bentivoglio family contributed to the cultural and urban development of the area. Great reclamation works were begun, transforming the swampy environment into a prosperous city, as witnessed by the beautiful Piazza Bentivoglio.

What to see

The most important buildings overlook Piazza Bentivoglio, a square of 100 m on each side with a splendid arcade on three sides: Palazzo Bentivoglio, the Civic Tower with the Clock, and the Church of Santa Maria della Neve.

Bentivoglio Palace built between 1594 and 1600, is the work of the architect Aleotti.

In the left wing of the Palace is a Baroque-style theater built in 1775 by Giovan Battista Fattori.

On the ground floor, we find the Carpenters Room, today

an exhibition space, while on the first floor, the Gentilizia Chapel, the Aeneid Room, the Icarus Room, the Jupiter Room, and the Giants Room. The latter was frescoed between 1620 and 1623 by Pier Francesco Battistelli, with scenes from Torquato Tasso's poem "La Gerusalemme liberata."

In front of the Palace stands the Civic Tower with the Clock, built in the early 1600s.

Church of Santa Maria della Neve, also by Aleotti, preserves the altarpiece of the Annunciation by Carlo Bononi.

The village of Gualtieri, thanks to its artistic and cultural riches, has been included among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
