Gambulaga was a prosperous village on the side of one of the essential branches of the Po.

Since the year 334 AD, due to the continuous depositions of the Po and its tributaries, several small islands were formed. One of these had the name Lacus Lungus (Long Lake), from which the name Gambulaga.

Gambulaga Church

The imposing church of San Giorgio stands 24 m high on the banks of the River Sandalo.

It was built in 1777 on commission from the parish priest Don Francesco Marchini.

The architect Antonio Foschini wanted to give the building the shape of a ship of which the apse represented the prow and the façade the stern.

The structure is remarkably sober, post-baroque. Inside, the single large nave is enriched by four side altars and large stained glass windows that spread a copious and golden light.

The ceiling is richly frescoed.

The pictorial decorations in the apse area and the side altars date back to the 1950s.

In the 14th century, the church of Gambulaga constituted, together with that of Runco, Voghenza, Masi, Gualdo, and Quartiere, the parish church of Voghiera.
