Inaugurated in 1998, the Archaeological Park “Città del Tufo” is located in the municipality of Sorano, in Tuscany. This initiative of the municipal administration has as its primary objective the enhancement and protection of a historical-cultural heritage of extraordinary value, which has remained intact for centuries. The area has been inhabited since ancient times and offers suggestive cave settlements, villages and medieval fortifications, all located near important Etruscan-Roman remains.
The park, with particular attention to the Etruscan period, preserves evidence of the late ancient and medieval era, such as castles, churches and numerous cave dwellings. The main monumental area is located in Sovana, amidst rich Mediterranean vegetation. Here, visitors can explore incredible necropolises, including the Pola tomb and the Ildebranda tomb, along with other decorated tombs such as that of the Typhon and the Siren.
The Vie Cave: A Unique Experience
A distinctive element of the Park are the Vie Cave, narrow and winding paths that allow you to explore deep valleys and plateaus. The Via Cava di San Sebastiano, with walls over 20 meters high, offers a fascinating experience, while the Cavone adds further charm to the environment. Moving towards Sorano, you arrive at the rock settlement of San Rocco, famous for its small church dedicated to the Saint and for the environments dug into the tuff that include tombs and homes.
Another must-see stop is Vitozza, a fascinating medieval rock settlement dating back to the 12th century. Here, visitors can admire the remains of fortifications, churches and caves, all immersed in a natural setting of rare beauty. This area was abandoned in the 15th century due to conflicts and looting, but today it continues to tell its story in the places that compose it.
The Parco Archeologico Città del Tufo is not only a place of historical interest, but also an immersive experience in nature and culture, ideal for those who want to discover the richness of Etruscan and medieval Italian history. Visiting this park is an unmissable opportunity to experience a real dive into the past.
