Forest Castle - Lagundo (BZ) - Trentino-Alto Adige

The Forest Castle, located in the municipal area of Lagundo, is a fascinating place that stands majestically near the famous Forst brewery. Despite its indefensible position, this castle had significant military importance as the only fortress on the right bank of the Adige for a long stretch of the valley.

Built in the 13th century by a ministerial family of the counts of Tyrol, the castle has undergone several ownership changes over the centuries.

Its history, although not full of significant events, presents an exciting episode: in 1421, the knight adventurer and troubadour Oswald of Wolkenstein stayed there temporarily after being captured by his adversaries and handed over to Duke Frederick the Hollowpocket.

During the 16th century, the castle was renovated into its current form by the Fuchs family of Fuchsberg.

Subsequently, it passed to the Brandis, who held it until 1860. Despite a fire in 1803, the castle was restored towards the end of the 19th century. After the Second World War, it was purchased by a local entrepreneur who transformed it into a historic hotel, although, unfortunately, it is currently closed.

With its picturesque porticoes, the castle courtyard preserves many furnishings and paintings from the Baroque era, offering a fascinating insight into the past. Although it cannot be visited, Castle Foresta remains a symbol of history and beauty in Val Venosta.
