Faenza (RA) - Emilia Romagna

Faenza is a splendid city of art whose fame shone in the Renaissance period for producing ceramic objects exported to many European countries.

The city hosts one of the world's most beautiful and complete art collections, conserved at the International Museum of Ceramics.

Founded in 1908 by Gaetano Ballardini, the museum collects pieces made of ceramic from every geographical origin and every historical period.

The permanent collections are spread over an area of approximately 15,000 square meters and are divided into two sectors:

the retrospective part, housed in the ancient spaces of the

former Camaldolese female convent of San Magiorio; the twentieth-century and contemporary part, exhibited in the new buildings built around the year 2000.

The visit itinerary includes the Historical Library, the Restoration Laboratory, and the "Playing with Ceramics" Educational Laboratory.

Also worth a visit is the Carlo Zauli Museum, which recounts the life and work of one of the greatest ceramic sculptors of the 20th century.

Through the rooms of Zauli's studio workshop, you will discover the clay cellar, the enamel room, the hall of ovens, and the large reliefs, where the ceramist transformed the clod of earth into actual sculpture.

Noteworthy is the Palazzo Milzetti, the National Museum of the Neoclassical Age seat in Romagna.

The historic center of Faenza is concentrated around the contiguous Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Della Libertà, overlooked by:

the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo, dating back to the

15th century; the Clock Tower, of seventeenth-century origin.

At the center of Piazza della Libertà stands the Monumental Fountain, one of the undisputed symbols of the city, which for centuries has provided healthy water to the local population.

Gastronomy

Among the typical dishes to be tasted in Faenza: are piadina romagnola, fish brodetto alla romagnola, tortellini in broth, tagliatelle with meat sauce, and Romagna platter made up of local cold cuts and cheeses.
