Ezzelini Castle - Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Colle - Bassano del Grappa (VI) - Veneto

The Castle of the Ezzelini in Bassano del Grappa has a fascinating history that begins in 998 when it was built as part of the first defensive fortifications around the Church of Santa Maria. Over the centuries, the castle has seen the passage of several powerful families, such as the Ezzelini and the Scaligeri, who have contributed to making it an important strategic point.

The castle has withstood bombardments throughout its history and demonstrated its solidity during the war between the Republic of Venice and the Kingdom of Hungary in 1411.

However, during the War of the League of Cambrai in 1508, Maximilian of Habsburg's army managed to conquer the castle, marking the end of its military function.

After this event, the castle was abandoned, and its importance shifted towards the development of commercial and artisanal activities within the walls of the city of Bassano. In the following years, the castle underwent restoration work, making it suitable for hosting temporary exhibitions and theatrical performances, such as those of Opera Estate.

Today, the castle square, where the entrance to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Colle is located, is open to the public. At the same time, the walkway is only accessible on certain occasions. The Cathedral, built in the same period as the castle, is a place of great historical and religious importance for the city of Bassano del Grappa.

The building has undergone several modifications over the centuries, but its predominant architectural style is seventeenth-century Baroque, both inside and outside.

Inside the Cathedral, one can admire works of art of great interest, such as the Altarpiece and the Stoning of Saint Stephen, attributed to Leandro da Ponte.

A fresco depicting Saint Bassianus, the patron saint of Bassano, is located in the church's vault, adding a touch of spirituality and devotion to the place. Furthermore, the Cathedral's organ, dating back to 1796, is an element of great artistic and musical value that enriches the atmosphere of the place.

In conclusion, the Castle of Bassano del Grappa and the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Colle represent two important places of historical, artistic, and religious interest for the city. Their history and beauty attract visitors worldwide, allowing them to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Bassano del Grappa.
