Cypresses from the film "The GLADIATOR" - Pienza(SI) - Val d'Orcia - UNESCO World Heritage - Tuscany

After visiting Pienza, we search for the Cypresses from the film "Il Gladiatore." We had to drive around a bit because we had no idea where that heavenly place chosen to shoot the last scene was.

Little did we know that the Gladiator's Elysian fields were located just below Pienza, on the dirt road that descends from the Pieve di Corsignano towards the countryside.

We park the car in the small space where the ancient Church of Saints Vito and Modesto stands and walk along the white road that descends towards the fields.

After a few meters, to our great amazement, we find ourselves at the finale of the beautiful film.

What opens up before our eyes is an incredible panorama.

I would say that in addition to the cypresses, so imposing, the wheat fields are the protagonists and make the landscape incomparable.

Fans of the film will feel a strong emotion to relive the last scene almost in first person, so much so that many try to imitate the protagonist while he caresses the wheat.

The Elysian Fields were, in ancient times, the abode after the death of those loved by the gods. Perhaps it is also for this reason that Maximus, after the stab he had inflicted in the clash with Commodus, finds himself in this Paradise, where he meets his wife and son again. This is the most famous and exciting scene of the film, and it is also the scene that made this spectacular place known.
