Coazzolo (AT) - Church of Tremlett, giant bench and pastel vineyard - Piedmont

Coazzolo, a town of about 280 inhabitants, is nestled in the hills between Monferrato and Langhe, a few kilometers from Neive.

This small village, which already offers breathtaking views, has been enhanced by simple initiatives by famous artists, which attract many visitors every year, which you will discover shortly by reading this article.

Monuments of the village

Coazzolo was founded around 1000 on the top hill overlooking the Tinella Valley.

In the town's main square, we can admire the baroque Church of San Siro vescovo, built on a pre-existing building and mentioned for the first time in documents from the end of 1500.

Behind the church, the Castle, whose original layout presumably dates back to the 12th century. The castle, now private property, has an elegant and residential aspect.

Initiatives: Contemporary Art

One of the unmissable stops is the small Natural Amphitheater:

built-in in 2016, with wooden chairs and benches that make up the semicircle used for theatrical performances, concerts, and artistic performances. From here, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Moscato hills and the Alpine peaks, including that of Monviso.

The giant blue bench is suitable to make us feel a bit small. The bar is part of the Big Benches project and is a gift from the Michele Chiarlo farm from 2016. Getting on this bench is truly a unique experience, which gives us a feeling of wonder and amazement for the beauties surrounding us.

You cannot miss a stop at the beautiful Moscato Chapel. The building, originally dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine, was built in 1689 and made distinctive by the decorative intervention of David Tremlett. The British artist used the wall drawing technique by performing abstract decorations with colored pastels where the predominant hues are warm colors: olive green, yellow, and Siena red. These colors take on different reflections and brightnesses according to the times of the day and coexist in harmony with the colors of the countryside where the work is inserted.

About 150 m from the church, we find the Vineyard of the Pastels, property of the Anfosso Piercarlo farm, the creator of the colorful and original poles in the shape of colored pastels. In the panoramic point, there is a table with a couple of benches, and from here, we can enjoy a 360 ° view over the expanses of hills planted with vines.

Specialty

In Coazzolo, the Sagra della Cognà is set up in October: a sort of jam typical of the hilly areas of southern Piedmont, made with the must of freshly picked and pressed grapes. It is a typically autumn preparation, often homemade at the end of the harvest.
