Defined as "the dying city," today it is reborn and is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy... #tuttitaly
Civita di Bagnoregio - a truly suggestive place, among the most beautiful in Italy.
From a distance, the view is astonishing; the houses are faded in a single embrace to avoid being "swallowed" by the surrounding valley. The historic center takes you back in time.
This remarkable place left an indelible memory in my mind. I did not imagine there could be such a beautiful place in Italy. You will be delighted by the panorama that appears in front of you just before the bridge, the only way of communication with the Borgo.
Curiosities about Civita di Bagnoregio:
A precedent was blown up by the Germans in 1944, during World War II. Half the town collapsed in the terrible earthquake of 1695, which also canceled the ancient road of Roman origin. Today the village can only be accessed via a 300-meter-long reinforced concrete footbridge built in 1965.
According to a 2011 census, the inhabitants of Civita di Bagnoregio are 16. But the latest estimates speak of just ten inhabitants, or even 7.
There are several films set or shot here in Civita di Bagnoregio: "The two colonels" with Totò; "Pinocchio" in 2009; "General Dispute" with Alberto Sordi; "A Question of Karma" with Fabio De Luigi and some opening scenes of the Brazilian soap "Terra Nostra."
Civita di Bagnoregio also appears in the animated masterpiece "The enchanted city" by master Hayao Miyazaki. Since 2001, when the famous film was made, the number of Japanese visiting Civita di Bagnoregio has increased by 20%.
