Church of San Giovanni Evangelista - Scicli (RG) - UNESCO Heritage - Noto Valley - Sicily

The Church of San Giovanni Evangelista in Scicli is a historical treasure dating back over seven centuries. Founded before 1300, the church has a rich history of fascinating events that have shaped its current appearance.

The church was initially the headquarters of the "Confraternity of the Noble Whites," a benevolent organization known for its charitable and merciful works for the local population until 1860.

Later, the church was handed over to the monks of San Benedetto, who built a monastery that contributed to the development of the city's religious and economic activities.

However, the church's original structure suffered serious damage following the 1693 earthquake. Only in the second half of the 18th century was the church rebuilt several times, assuming its current appearance.

The facade of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista features an elegant concave-convex layout with three distinct orders. Ionic and Corinthian columns adorn the facade, while a broken pediment inscribed with the completion date of the works (1803) grandly closes the structure.

The interior of the church is equally fascinating. It has an oval plan and a neoclassical style.

The altars placed between the semicolumns and the ceiling decorated with stucco and gildings create an atmosphere of great beauty and solemnity.

Of particular interest is the 17th-century work known as the "Christ of Burgos," a crucifix depicted in a priestly surplice. This iconography is very rare in Italy and likely of Spanish origin. This artistic treasure is stored in the sacristy, further enriching the artistic and historical importance of the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista.

Furthermore, inside the church, three medallions depicting scenic views of Scicli can be admired, further enhancing visitors' sensory and cultural experience.

Exploring the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista is a unique experience that allows one to immerse oneself in the city of Scicli's fascinating history and appreciate the art and architecture that characterize this sacred place.
