Cerreto d'Esi (AN) - Marche

A beautiful village in the province of Ancona is a jewel that fascinates and enchants..#tuttitaly

The small village of Cerreto d'Esi rises in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region, along the upper Esino valley.

The first residential nucleus of Cerreto d'Esi was formed by some inhabitants of nearby Tuficum who took refuge in these areas to escape the Longobards.

Cerreto d'Esi represents a typical example of a medieval castle.

Among the architectural beauties:

Tower of Belisarius. 25 m high and known for its steep slope, the tower takes its name from the Roman general who, according to legend, founded the city.

It seems that the lower part of the building dates back to the 8th century; as regards the upper part: according to some, the building dates back to the 12th century, according to others, to a period between the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Tower is not what it appears to be. Although circular on the outside, the plan of the building is square on the inside. Its rounded shape is, therefore, a coating added for stability.

The Castle is located at an elevated position of 265 m a.s.l. It retains much of the original urban structure. Its entrance is marked by the magnificent Porta Maggiore known as Giustinianea, dating back to the 15th century: a classic tower gate with a slender pointed arch, on whose capital you can see a sculpted mermaid.

Inside the Castle, the splendid Church of the Annunziata, built in 1507, on whose perimeter walls some valuable frescoes are visible: a Crucifixion and a Virgin Mary, works by various artists of figurative culture from Fabriano and Umbria.
