The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Reggio Emilia is an essential religious building from 857. Over the centuries, it has undergone several architectural modifications and adaptations, following the Romanesque and then the Renaissance style.
Inside the Cathedral are several works of art created by influential artists of the time. Among these are the statues of Adam and Eve and the Saints Crisanto and Daria, executed by the sculptor Prospero Sogari, known as il Clemente.
On the tower's facade is a statue of the Madonna with Child with the Fiordibelli spouses, created by Bartolomeo Spani.
The chapels inside the Duomo are covered in precious marble and house works of great artistic value. Among these are the tomb of Orazio Malaguzzi and the funerary monument of Valerio Malaguzzi, both created by Bartolomeo Spani. Furthermore, the Fiordibelli Chapel contains a work by the famous painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as il Guercino.
The Crypt of the Cathedral, dating back to the 12th or 13th century, is characterized by cross vaults and columns with decorated capitals. Inside is the altar with the ark and the bodies of the Martyrs Saints Crisanto and Daria. During the restoration works in 1923, a fragment of Romanesque flooring was discovered, leading to an underground chamber with a mosaic from the 2nd to the 4th century depicting geometric figures and animals.
The Crypt comprises three chapels, each with different artistic and historical characteristics. In particular, the central chapel houses the tomb of the martyrs Crisanto and Daria, while the one on the right is dedicated to the fallen in war, and the one on the left contains a bas-relief depicting the Three Wise Men.
