Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta - Parma Cathedral - Parma (PR) - Emilia Romagna

The Cathedral of Parma is one of the primary examples of Romanesque architecture in northern Italy. Its gabled facade is characterized by a central portal surmounted by a rose window and a series of blind arches.

The cathedral's interior is shaped like a Latin cross, with three aisles and a transept. The walls of the side aisles are decorated with round arches and single windows, while a ribbed vault covers the central aisle.

One of the main treasures of the cathedral is the cycle of frescoes painted by Lattanzio Gambara between 1567 and 1573.

These frescoes depict episodes from the Old and New Testaments and allegorical figures. On the counter facade is a large fresco depicting the Ascension of Christ, painted by Gambara himself.

The cathedral dome is decorated with the Assumption of the Virgin painted by Antonio Allegri, Correggio, between 1524 and 1530. This fresco is considered one of the masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. The artist created a perspective space of incredible depth, making the dome appear taller than it is.

The Cathedral of Parma is an essential place of worship and a highly visited tourist attraction. Its architecture and the artworks inside represent an important cultural and historical heritage.
