Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Genesio - San Miniato (PI) - Tuscany

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Genesio, also known as the San Miniato Cathedral, is a place of great historical and architectural importance. Built in the 12th century, it is believed to have been erected on the remains of an older chapel. Initially dedicated to Santa Maria, its name was changed following the destruction of the Lombard village in 1248. From that moment, the cathedral acquired the baptismal font and the title of San Genesio.

The building underwent several renovations over the centuries. In the 15th century, the church was expanded, and the majestic Tower of Matilde was erected, named in honor of the legendary Matilde di Canossa, who is said to have been born in the palace adjacent to the cathedral.

Projections characterize the cathedral's facade and feature a unique decoration, with 26 ceramic basins inserted into the masonry. These basins are remarkable for their elegance and originality. At the bottom of the facade, there are three 16th-century sandstone portals.

The cathedral's interior features a neo-renaissance architectural style, the result of restoration work carried out in the 19th century by Pietro Bernardini. The three aisles are separated by two round arches supported by Ionic columns in faux polychrome marble. The carved and gilded coffered ceiling, dating back to the 17th century, adds a Baroque touch to the structure.

Unfortunately, the cathedral suffered a tragic event during World War II. On July 22, 1944, an American artillery shell penetrated the church through the rose window of the southern arm of the transept, causing the death of 55 people in the right aisle. This episode inspired one of the most famous films by the Taviani brothers, titled "The Night of the Shooting Stars."

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Genesio is a place of great beauty and historical significance, deserving to be visited and admired for its unique architecture and fascinating history.
