It stands on a tufa spur, which dominates the valley of the river Neto. On certain days, at dawn, when the mist envelops the valley, it resembles a giant stone ship... #tuttitaly

Santa Severina is a charming medieval village in Calabria, a region rich in history and picturesque corners. With its imposing castle and picturesque alleys, a trip to this place is like a leap into the past. With just over 2000 inhabitants, Santa Severina is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The Castle of Santa Severina is a formidable example of military architecture, with its towers and intricate underground passages that retain all their charm and mystery.

Scholars believe that the castle area represents the acropolis of ancient Siberene, which, under Byzantine rule, became a center of great importance, especially from a religious point of view.

In the 16th century, the castle underwent a complete renovation by Andrea Carafa, from whom it takes the name Castello Carafa. Over the centuries, further restoration and embellishment work has been carried out on the castle, including the frescoes painted by Francesco Giordano in the 18th century.

Today, the Castle of Santa Severina houses a museum that exhibits artifacts from archaeological excavations and other collections from the surrounding area. It is also the headquarters of the Documentation Center for Studies on Castles and Fortifications of Calabria and hosts art exhibitions, exhibitions of artistic craftsmanship, and concerts. This enchanting place is an actual historical and cultural treasure that should be visited.
