Monferrato Asti is famous for its sparkling wines and historic wineries. Between towers and castles, besides wine, there is much more in Canelli... #UNESCO #tuttitaly
Canelli is a town in the province of Asti that was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, together with Asti Spumante.
The territory is located on two large hilly areas separated by the Belbo axis.
What to visit
In Canelli, we can admire the Gancia Castle, built in the 11th century for defensive purposes.
Destroyed in 1617 during the war against Monferrato, the structure was rebuilt in 1930 as an elegant villa. The Gancia family currently owns it.
The parish church of San Tommaso is worth a visit, which preserves attractive furnishings and painted canvases from the Baroque era.
Underground cellars
Canelli is famous for its underground cellars. These are actual underground cathedrals, where millions of bottles left to ferment at a constant temperature of 12-14° take on the typical aromas and flavors of Canellese sparkling wine and wine.
