Where Giotto's Angel is kept, the only mosaic work by the Florentine artist that has survived to this day... #tuttitaly
Boville Ernica, located in the province of Frosinone, is a fascinating artistic village, including one of Italy's most beautiful villages, thanks to the charm of its historic center characterized by picturesque streets, alleys, and small squares.
What to visit
The visit can start from Porta San Nicola, where you can admire the grandeur of the city walls and its towers. Continuing along Via Roma, you can admire Palazzo Liberati and then turn onto Via della Ripresa to reach the majestic Palazzo Filonardi. This architectural complex, built on the ruins of an ancient castle, is full of splendid portals, three-light windows, precious floorings, and majestic staircases.
Another unmissable stop is the Abbey of San Pietro Ispano, probably dating back to the 10th or 11th century. Inside, you can visit the crypt and the Simoncelli chapel, which houses precious works of art from the ancient Constantinian Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican. Among these works is Giotto's Angel, the only mosaic by the Florentine artist that has come down to us.
Continuing along Corso Umberto I, you can admire the Church of the Baptist, Palazzo Simoncelli, and Palazzo De Angelis.
Piazza Sant'Angelo offers a suggestive view of the long row of Palazzi Emilio and Velio Filonardi, dating back to the 15th century, and of the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo, inside which there is the funerary monument of Cardinal Ennio Filonardi, a valuable Saint Sebastian of the Cavalier d'Arpino and other notable paintings from various periods.
The visit can continue towards Piazza Santo Stefano, where the Church of Santo Stefano is located with eighteenth-century paintings from the Bolognese school and the Palazzo Bulgarini.
Going down towards Piazza San Francesco, you can admire the Bulgarini Tower, the Church of San Francesco (now the exhibition hall), and the Monastery of San Francesco. During the restoration work on the church, fourteenth-fifteenth-century frescoes were discovered, some attributed to Byzantine art, and a fourteenth-century cycle attributed to a pupil of Giotto.
Going along Via Nuova up to Via Tritoni, you arrive at Piazza Santa Maria, where the Church of Santa Maria, the Cometti Tower, and the Palazzo Vizzardelli, dating back to the 18th century, are located.
Finally, you can reach Porta Santa Maria through the street of the same name, which leads out of the historic center.
But there's more! Along the medieval walls interspersed with turrets, you can enjoy a splendid view of the landscape of the Ciociaria hills.
Gastronomy
Among the most renowned traditional dishes of Boville Ernica, lasagna with beans stands out, a tasty and substantial dish that combines the delicacy of pasta with the intense flavor of beans.
