Bova (RC) - Cathedral and Norman Castle - Most beautiful villages in Italy - Aspromonte - Calabria

Bova, located in a panoramic position at an altitude of 850 meters, is one of the most important centers on the Greek island of the province of Reggio Calabria. The village boasts a long history, with many traces still visible in the settlement.

Tourist attractions

The Cathedral of Bova, an ancient diocese, has an original construction dating back to the early centuries AD and is documented in the 5th century. Dedicated to the Madonna della Presentazione or "Isodia," the Cathedral has an interior with three basilica-style naves. The most notable works are the Chapel of the Sacrament, created by Sicilian craftsmen specialized in processing inlaid polychrome marbles, and the statue of the Madonna "Isodia" with the Child, attributed to Rinaldo Bonanno.

The Norman Castle, built between the 10th and 11th centuries, is now in ruins and is located on the top of a rocky spur. The Norman Tower, dating back to the 11th century, was located guarding one of the four gates that allowed access to the city.

Among the alleys of Bova are many noble palaces built in stone and bricks, enriched on the outside by decorations of pilasters, cornices, corbels, and splendid entrance portals.

The Mesiani-Mazzacuva Palace represents an essential testimony of neoclassical architecture. It is intended to be a cultural center to promote events, exhibitions, and activities related to the history and art of the region.

The Nesci Sant'Agata Palace, privately owned, represents an example of eighteenth-century architecture and can be admired from the outside.

The Tuscano Palace, dating back to the 19th century, will be destined to become the Visitor Center of the Aspromonte National Park, hosting exhibitions, events, and activities related to promoting and protecting the national park.

Gastronomy

Bova's gastronomy offers delicious culinary specialties, such as maccarruni with goat sauce, cordeddi with sauce, and tagghiarini with chickpeas. Goat meat alla vutana is a highly appreciated dish.

The region is also renowned for its cured meats, cheeses, and desserts. Lestopitta, a fritter made with flour and water, fried in oil, and eaten hot, is a must-try.
