It is among the most critical military engineering works in Europe. It is the last Bourbon fortress because it was located on the border between the Viceroyalty of Naples and the Papal States... #tuttitaly
With its 500 m long and 45 m wide, the Bourbon Fortress of Civitella del Tronto is one of Europe's largest and most important military engineering works.
It is located at 600 m and has been the protagonist of sieges and battles. Thanks to subsequent restoration interventions, the place can be fully visited.
From an architectural point of view, the Fortress can be divided into two parts: one for residential use and the other for defensive purposes.
The defense took place thanks to the presence of a moat surmounted by a drawbridge or by consistent guard groups that had control of the stronghold.
Walking towards the highest area, we find the Gran Strada, which houses the ruins of the lodgings of soldiers and non-commissioned officers and the oven used for bread.
In the west, you can walk along a walkway that gives you a broad view of Civitella del Tronto and a breathtaking view.
The various functions of the squares:
- The Piazza del Cavaliere was used to train troops and welcomed the entrance to a cistern.
- The Piazza d'Armi was used daily for the flag raising.
- The two most important buildings were created in the Great Square: the Governor's Palace and the Church of San Giacomo.
The Governor's Palace was the headquarters of the Fortress command.
In the part where the kitchen and canteen were once housed, the Museum of Weapons and Ancient Maps was then set up.
This is divided into four rooms: in the first, there are the most everyday objects; in the second, weapons belonging to the Savoy and Bourbon armies are exhibited; the third room houses a column in its center as if to signify the division from the Papal State and the kingdom of the two Sicilies; and the fourth room houses the oldest weapons in the exhibition.
When you go to Civitella del Tronto, a visit to the Fortress is mandatory to relive the history of this place entirely.
