Birthplace of Gioachino Rossini - Pesaro (PU) - Italian Capital of Culture 2024 - Marche

The Casa Rossini is a must-visit stop for all music and history lovers in Pesaro. Located on the street that now bears the name of the renowned composer Gioachino Rossini, the building has a fascinating history dating back to the 15th century. The two lower floors were built at the time, with the two upper floors added later.

In this house, on February 29, 1792, the great maestro Gioachino Rossini was born. A commemorative plaque placed in a room on the first floor reads: "The divine art of music smiled in this room at the birth of Gioacchino Rossini." It was here that the composer spent his early years with his family.

The original structure of the house still retains features from the past, such as arched windows, fireplaces blackened by smoke, and some elements of an ancient kitchen. In 1892, on the centenary of Rossini's birth, the Municipality of Pesaro purchased the building and transformed it into a museum. In 1904, it was declared a national monument.

The collections displayed at Casa Rossini include prints, engravings, lithographs, and portraits belonging to 19th-century Rossini enthusiasts like Alphonse Hubert Martel. Among the works on display are prints of Rossini's operas and portraits of his famous interpreters. The rich collection also features thirty portraits of the composer, from youth to old age, and a series of caricatures depicting Rossini and other figures from the musical world of the time.

Another attraction of Casa Rossini is the room dedicated to music, where a fortepiano built in Venice in 1809 and some of the maestro's autographs can be found. Since 2015, thanks to collaboration with the Rossini Foundation, the museum has enriched its collection with new documents, including letters and autographed scores, original librettos, and digitized musical scores.

On the ground floor, there is a shop dedicated to Gioachino Rossini, a true paradise for enthusiasts looking for CDs, DVDs, publications, and merchandise dedicated to the composer. Locally made artistic ceramics inspired by Rossini's works are also available for purchase.

In conclusion, Casa Rossini is a place rich in history and culture, offering an exciting immersion into the life and work of one of Italy's greatest composers.
