The Abruzzo village inhabited by deer, known among tourists for the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park in which it is immersed... #tuttitaly
Barrea is an Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Parks tourist center. It owes its charm to the landscape in which it is immersed: situated on a rocky spur, surrounded by mountains, beech woods, and small rivers with crystal clear waters.
The town is very popular with hikers, also because it is from here that trails lead to numerous points of interest: Lake Vivo, Lake Pantaniello, Lake Barrea, and the Resuni refuge.
Of very ancient origins, the Barreani descend from the Samnite populations who inhabited these valleys. Traces of its past are preserved in the historic center.
Founded around the year 1000 by a group of Monks, Barrea was marked by three historical events: the foundation of the Abruzzo National Park, the creation of the artificial lake (born by blocking the course of the Sangro river), and the earthquake - which in 1984 caused various damages to the village.
The center, embellished with churches and buildings, is charming to visit. Furthermore, on the shores of Lake Barrea, there is a small settlement of deer, headed by the "pioneer deer" baptized by the inhabitants with the name "Oreste."
In August, during the Sagra degli Orapi, you can taste the orapo, a spinach that grows wildly in the mountains of Abruzzo. This is prepared with dumplings.
