Bard (AO) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Valle d'Aosta

Bard is a small Italian town with just over one hundred inhabitants and extends close to an imposing rocky promontory. Its strategic position made it the hub of commercial and military activities.

With its historic houses, Bard has become part of Italy's most beautiful villages.

Among the historical testimonies, the site is interesting - with Neolithic rock engravings; and the stretch of the Roman Via Consolare built between 31 and 25 BC.

The site is characterized by the "potholes of the giants," petroglyphs, and the "women's slide." The latter was believed to promote fertility.

What to see

The Bard Fort dominates the village. It can be accessed with panoramic lifts. Here you can visit: the Museum of the Alps, the Prisons, and the Museum of Fortifications and Frontiers.

The Fort is also home to critical temporary exhibitions, events, and shows throughout the year.

The medieval village is full of houses declared a National Monument. It can be visited using the Millibard auto guide.

The Via Francigena crosses Bard - the best-known pilgrimage route of antiquity.

In its last stage in the Aosta Valley, this itinerary runs through the entire village at the foot of the Fort.

Manifestations

- Marché au Fort: exhibition market of typical food and wine products of the Valle D'Aosta organized on the second Sunday of October.

- Napoleonica, Napoleon's Reserve Army at Forte di Bard: historical re-enactment held every two years, on the first weekend of September.

The event commemorates the passage of Napoleon's troops to Bard in May 1800.

Gastronomy

Among the typical dishes: Valle d'Aosta ribs, Valle d'Aosta fondue, gnocchi alla bava, peppers with anchovies, baked polenta, cauliflower sauce, potato flan, Aosta tiles, Valle d'Aosta trout.
