Argenta (FE) - Emilia Romagna

Located in the province of Ferrara, Argenta was founded at the behest of Esuperanzio, bishop of Ravenna, along the right bank of the river Po, near the parish church of San Giorgio - the oldest place of worship in the area.

Among the main places of worship is the church of San Giovanni, where there is a 17th-century oratory; the church of San Lorenzo, which contains a painting by Dosso Dossi; the Church of the Celletta, whose origins date back to 1490.

Church of the Celletta

The current church dates back to 1606, built to welcome the faithful who came on a pilgrimage following a prodigious apparition of the Virgin Mary.

Characterized by an elliptical plan and classical-style decorative elements, the building, after having suffered severe damage in 1945, was restored in 1954. Inside was the painting by Garofalo - now kept in the Civic Museum inside the Church of San Domenico.

Valleys of Argenta

The ancient Argenta Valleys' remains are divided into three sections: Oasis of Campotto and Bassarone, Valle Santa, and Bosco di Traversante.

The Campotto Valleys and the Bosco di Traversante can be visited on foot or by bicycle and are accessible only by a guide. Valle Santa, on the other hand, can be seen freely.

Argenta cuisine

Gastronomy is best expressed in the "poor" dishes of the peasant and valley cuisine: pork, eel, frogs, catfish, and game.
