The Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria delle Moje, located in Moie in the municipality of Maiolati Spontini, is an architectural jewel that fascinates the eyes and the soul. This ancient, extraordinary Romanesque architecture stands majestically in the Marche region.

Originally located outside the town, along the left bank of the Esino River, the abbey was located in a marshy area called "moje." Founded in the 11th century by the powerful Attoni-Alberici-Gozoni family, which dominated the central Marche region, the abbey initially served as a private monastery.

Over the centuries, the Abbey of Santa Maria delle Moje has received substantial donations and has undergone notable expansions. In the 15th century, his property extended over 428 hectares. The church of Santa Maria, with its inscribed Greek cross plan, is an example of architectural mastery. The squared yellowish sandstone stones of medium size give a unique and evocative atmosphere.

Inside, the church is divided into three naves, each composed of three bays supported by four cruciform pillars. Unfortunately, only two rooms remain of the original monastery. One has a rectangular shape with a barrel vault, while the other, communicating with the first, has a quadrilateral plan and cross vaults.

Despite losing much of its original structure, the Abbey of Santa Maria delle Moje continues to enchant and fascinate lovers of Romanesque architecture and the history of the Marche. It is a place that contains centuries of history and spirituality, a silent witness to a glorious past.
