Castellino delle Formiche is an ancient perched village in Castellino di Guiglia.
The name results from an erroneous popular translation of the medieval Castrum Formigis, which refers to the Latin formido, formidabilis, which is "Castle that inspires fear."
The fortress of Castellino in the Middle Ages was the seat
of a branch of the Malatigni family. In the 14th century, it then passed to the Montecuccoli.
The medieval tower is the only testimony of the ancient castle. Transformed into a bell tower, it overlooks the square and is surrounded by a few perched houses.
The fifteenth-century church dedicated to S. Stefano and S. Lorenzo overlooks the square.
Built inside the Castle, in the oratory of San Lorenzo - it preserves a baptismal font from 1662 in sculpted sandstone.
Demonstrations
For the Madonna del Rosario, a traditional parish festival, the village sets up a food stand full of mountain specialties: polenta, crescentine, fried dumplings, borlenghi, and surprise desserts.
