San Giovanni in Marignano is a place rich in history, deeply linked to the presence of the Olivetan monks. In 1157, Pope Adrian IV confirmed the ownership of the "castrum Marignani" and the church of San Giovanni to the monks of San Vitale in Ravenna. This act certifies that the monks had already taken possession of the territory, probably thanks to donations made by Pietro di Bennone.

Restorations and transformations over the centuries

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the church served as a parish but lacked adequate space and decor. It is likely that it was during this period that the first substantial renovation of the church of San Giovanni began, which later took on the title of San Pietro.

The Olivetan monks completed a significant restoration in 1750, followed by additional interventions to enhance the interior furnishings. After the suppression of monasteries in 1797, one of the monks remained as parish priest until 1803, and in 1928, thanks to Don Pollini, the bell tower was erected.

Architecture and features of the church

Situated along the main thoroughfare of the walled village, the church of San Giovanni in Marignano stands out for its imposing size. The walls, plastered and painted in shades of pale yellow and sand, align with the aesthetics of the historic center. The façade opens onto a small square, enriched by a wide portal topped with a lunette. Decorated with a series of cornices and pilasters, the structure is crowned by a triangular pediment, which includes a rectangular window functioning as a rose window.

Inside, the building offers a harmonious single nave, decorated with side chapels that are half the height of the main nave. Natural light enters through high windows, creating a suggestive atmosphere.

The apse, elevated on two steps, houses an original altar with a large altarpiece framed in plaster. The barrel-vaulted ceiling contrasts with the elegant coverings of the side chapels, offering a splendid architectural panorama that tells centuries of history and faith.
