Parish Church of S. Maria in Garda - Villa Fontana, hamlet of Medicina (BO) - Emilia Romagna
The Church of Santa Maria in Garda, the parish church of Villa Fontana, is an important place of worship located in the municipality of Medicina, within the metropolitan city and archdiocese of Bologna. This church, dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, is part of the vicariate of Budrio-Castel San Pietro Terme and represents a significant symbol for the local community.
Origins and History
The roots of the Church of Santa Maria in Garda date back to the Early Middle Ages, with its foundation dated to the late 7th century, according to historical documents from the church of Saints John the Baptist and Donnino. Originally, the church was a pieve and in 1159 it was under the jurisdiction of the Camaldolese monks.
Over the centuries, the church evolved, becoming integrated into the parish of Medicina and gaining increasing importance within the community.
Architectural Transformations
Until the 16th century, the church had a gabled façade, with no windows, and a sloping roof that embraced both the religious building and the rectory. Over time, the structure underwent various renovation interventions. In the 17th century, the bell tower and other elements of the church were rebuilt or expanded. Significant renovations were also carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries, culminating in the neoclassical façade designed by the parish priest Don Paolo Farina in 1844, and the important post-war restoration in 1947.
The Interior of the Church
Inside, the church is characterized by three naves and eight altars, enriched by a variety of works of art. Among these, the main altarpiece representing the Nativity of Mary stands out. The walls host paintings and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries in Baroque style, making the environment a place of great artistic and historical value. Each chapel features significant works, such as the 17th-century crucifix by the artist Alessandro Algardi and the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Courtyard and the Little Theatre
The external courtyard of the church, adorned with centuries-old linden trees, is a place for gathering and contemplation. Here, there is also an ancient public fountain from 1832, which, although no longer functioning, testifies to the importance of the springs in the area.
Furthermore, the parish has a small theatre where comedies in the Villafontanese dialect are organized during the Easter and Christmas festivities, thus promoting local culture and traditions.
Cultural Heritage
Finally, the municipal museum of Medicina houses the original baptismal font of the pieve, dated to the 8th century, a valuable element that testifies to the rich history of this community. The Church of Santa Maria in Garda is not only a place of worship but a true treasure trove of history, art, and culture that welcomes the faithful and visitors in an embrace of spirituality and beauty.
