Mother Church of San Nicola - San Marco D'alunzio (ME) - One of the most beautiful villages in Italy - Sicily

The picturesque medieval district of San Marco d'Alunzio, nestled among the green hills of Sicily, boasts a true architectural gem: the Mother Church dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari. Built between 1584 and 1800, this sacred building is a true treasure trove of artistic and religious treasures.

The exterior of the Mother Church is imposing and majestic, with a facade decorated with three portals in precious local red marble and a magnificent rose window that illuminates the main entrance. Once you cross the threshold, your eyes are immediately captivated by the beauty of the 12 side chapels, dating back to the sixteenth century, richly decorated with paintings, wooden statues, and works of art of inestimable value.

Among the Mother Church's most significant works is the late Renaissance marble tabernacle on the High Altar, adorned with elegant angel sculptures. The seventeenth-century organ with the golden wood choir adds a touch of magnificence to the sacred atmosphere of the building. At the same time, the red aluntino marble baptismal font testifies to the thousand-year-old tradition of the local community.

The paintings adorning the church walls tell stories of faith and devotion, from the Last Supper fresco to the representation of the 18th-century Holy Trinity, passing through the delicate Madonna of the Rosary by Giuseppe Tomasi from 1655. The miraculously preserved statues of the Patron Saints Marco and Nicola, sculpted in precious white Carrara marble, add a touch of sacredness and protection to the environment.

Also very suggestive is the red marble sarcophagus of Archpriest J. Lanza Filingeri, which preserves the memory of a guardian of faith and tradition. In conclusion, the Mother Church of San Marco d'Alunzio represents an authentic testimony of Sicilian art and spirituality, where history, beauty, and devotion merge into a unique and unforgettable experience.
