Metropolitan Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the Logge di Braccio - Perugia (PG) - Umbria

In the heart of the historic center of Perugia, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo stands magnificently in Piazza IV Novembre, dominating the northern side of the city. This imposing religious building is one of the city's most precious treasures, housing works of art and relics of inestimable value.

The construction of the Cathedral dates back to the 14th century, but its origins go back to antiquity, with traces of an early church from the Etrusco-Roman era. Expansion and decoration works have continued over the centuries, giving the building the grandeur and magnificence that characterize it.

The exterior of the Cathedral, characterized by a façade and a side covered in red and white marble, hints at its grandeur and majesty. Works like the 16th-century wooden Crucifix and the statue of Pope Julius III further enrich the structure's architectural beauty.

Inside, the nave and apsidal chapels welcome visitors in a riot of colors and decorations that tell the story and devotion of generations of believers. Works such as Bishop Giovanni Andrea Baglioni's sarcophagus and the painting of the Virgin and the city's patron saints are just some of the testimonies of the cathedral's exceptional artistic value.

But the true jewel of the cathedral is the Chapel of the Holy Ring, which houses the revered relic of the Virgin's wedding ring. This precious object, kept in a safe protected by seven locks, is displayed to the public only twice a year, on July 29 and 30 and on the penultimate Sunday of January, during the celebration of the Marriage Feast and the blessing of wedding rings.

In addition to the cathedral's magnificence, visitors can admire the Loggia of Braccio Fortebraccio, a medieval structure next to the left façade of the building. This structure represents another precious piece of Umbria's history.

In conclusion, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo is much more than a place of worship: it is a true treasure trove of artistic and spiritual treasures that uniquely and evocatively narrate the history and identity of Perugia.
