Urbania, a small gem in the Marche region, is a place rich in history, art, and spirituality, home to two fascinating churches: the Church of San Francesco and the Church of Santa Caterina.

Church of San Francesco

Founded in 1215, the Church of San Francesco stands majestically, flanked by a convent built by Franciscan friars. Its entrance, characterized by a portico, features a Gothic portal in pink stone on the left, known as the Portal of the Holy Trinity. Although initially attributed to Lorenzo Ghiberti, it dates back to 1400, well before the master's stay in Pesaro. The Romanesque bell tower, dating back to the late 14th century, completes the image of this ancient building.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous transformations. In 1550, a renovation reduced the original fourteen altars to seven. It wasn't until 1756 that the church acquired a Baroque appearance, with an interesting architecture that has made it a symbol of the city.

Church of Saint Catherine

Nearby, the Church of Saint Catherine tells a story of art and community. Built in 1522 to a design by architect Taddeo Zandrini, it stands on the ruins of an ancient building erected in the 14th century by the Confraternity of Artists, a group that included painters, sculptors, and musicians. The classical façade features a portal elegantly framed by Doric columns, while the interior is distinguished by stucco and decorations.

The barrel vault is entirely adorned with frescoes illustrating the life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the work of artists such as Agostino Apolloni and Luzio Dolci. The scenes, including the Baptism in the Desert and the Martyrdom of the Saint, offer a profound insight into the spirituality and culture of that era. At the same time, the high altar houses a noble work by Donnino Berti celebrating the figure of Saint Catherine.

In both places of worship, the synthesis of history, art, and faith lives on, transforming Urbania today into a meeting point between past and present, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty and spirituality these historic buildings offer.
