The Church of Saints Cyrus and John, located in the heart of the historic center of Vico Equense, represents not only a place of worship but also a valuable historical and architectural testimony of the city.

History

The origins of the church date back to the 12th century, with a primitive, simple, and small structure. The first written attestations are dated 1486, when a rental contract for the building was drawn up, erected on the remains of a Roman villa. The church has had various roles, including serving as the seat of the city parliament until 1608.

Over the centuries, devotion to Saints Cyrus and John is evidenced by documents mentioning celebrations and donations.

A violent earthquake in 1696 severely damaged the church, leading to the decision to build a new one between 1700 and 1715, inaugurated by Bishop Thomas Aquinas. The official consecration took place in 1774. Over the years, the church has undergone various restoration interventions, including significant work in 1925 and 1967, to adapt it to the needs of the community.

Structure

The church, characterized by a Baroque style, features a façade divided into three sections.

The lower part houses a portal set in a tuff frame, while the upper part culminates in a wrought iron cross. Inside, it presents a central nave and several side chapels, initially seven, dedicated to significant figures of the Christian tradition.

The main altar, originally made of marble and designed by Gaetano Belli, has been redone according to the norms of the Second Vatican Council. Among the most important works of art, we find a wooden statue of the Immaculate, a canvas depicting the Deposition, and silver busts of Saints Cyrus and John, used as reliquaries. The church also features an organ dating back to 1930 and a dome decorated with ceramics.

The bell tower, erected in 1873, stands out for its Eastern style and was restored in 2003.

The Church of Saints Cyrus and John, with its historical and artistic charm, continues to be an important place of gathering and faith for the community of Vico Equense, carefully preserving the memory and traditions of the past.
