In the pulsating heart of Potenza, the devotion to Saint Francis of Assisi is manifested through the Church of San Francesco, a place of great historical and religious significance. This church, which originates from an ancient Franciscan convent, reveals its roots in 1265 with the construction of the convent, and in 1274 for the church itself. The structure stands on a proto-Romanesque oratory, and its facade is distinguished by an imposing Catalan portal dating back to 1499, richly decorated with floral and vegetable motifs.

Not far away, on Via Rosica, lies the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, another gem of Potenza's artistic heritage. The origins of this church date back to the 5th century. The current structure, with evident Romanesque-Lombard influence, is likely dated between the 10th and 12th centuries and is mentioned in an official document from 1178.

The facade is characterized by two tiers separated by pilasters, with a "cabin" shape that reflects the use of local stone, giving the building a chromatic harmony. A stone portal, with pointed arches, invites visitors to discover the interior, divided into three apsidal naves and illuminated by small windows that create a suggestive atmosphere.

Inside, the Church preserves numerous works of art. On the main altar, a polychrome wooden crucifix by an anonymous artist stands out. Additionally, the altarpiece of Saint Anthony of Padua, dating back to the 17th century, features decorated columns and a wooden sculpture of Saint Anthony, creating a strong visual and spiritual impact. The works of artists such as Simone da Firenze and Teodoro D’Errico further enrich the church, with paintings reflecting a fusion of styles and colors.

Finally, Giovanni de Gregorio, known as the Pietrafesa, surprises with his Annunciation, celebrating grace and beauty in the artistic representation of the sacred. The wooden sculpture of Saint Michael the Archangel, dating from the first half of the 18th century, completes this precious herbarium of spirituality and art.

Conclusion

The Church and Convent of San Francesco and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo are not only testimonies of faith but also living monuments of the history and culture of Potenza.
