Located in Fano, the Basilica of San Paterniano is a significant testimony to the architectural and artistic heritage of the 16th century. The current structure, built in 1547 with the authorization of Pope Paul III, replaced the previous basilica, whose origins date back to at least 1046, although its foundation is likely much older. Located along the Via Flaminia, the old basilica was outside the city walls.

The design of the new complex, which includes the church and convent, is traditionally attributed to the architect Jacopo Sansovino, although no reliable sources exist to confirm this attribution. The basilica was consecrated on April 17, 1558, and has retained its charm and grandeur ever since.

The façade, still in its raw state, is embellished with an elegant Michelangelo-style portal created in 1573 by Giacomo di Stefano Bambagini. The interior of the basilica, by contrast, is a magnificent example of opulence, structured in the form of a Latin cross and divided into three naves, with a barrel vault in the central nave. The nave culminates in a dome at the intersection with the transept, while the side aisles lead to the apse chapels dedicated to Saint Joseph and Saint Paternianus.

Numerous significant works enrich the basilica's artistic heritage. Among these, the altarpiece depicting Saint Paternianus in Glory, attributed to Alessandro Tiarini, and a copy of Guercino's Marriage of the Virgin, made by Giusto Cespi, stand out. There are also paintings by Bartolomeo Giancolini and Claudio Ridolfi, including the Virgin and Child with Saints Sebastian and Charles Borromeo.

Until 1860, the basilica was the seat of the Canons Regular of the Lateran, after which it was converted into barracks. Only in 1922 did it return to the care of the Capuchin Friars Minor. Today, the Basilica of San Paterniano is not only a place of worship, but also an important cultural and tourist center that recounts the history and art of the region, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who visit.
